Baptism/Thanksgiving

We offer baptism for both adults and children (previously called Christening). For those who’d prefer a less ‘churchy’ approach, or would prefer to let their child make their own choice to be baptised when they are older, we can offer a service thanksgiving.

Child:

Are you considering Baptism (Christening) or Thanksgiving for your child? We see it as a privilege to be able to share with you in this special and important time.

Baptisms and Thanksgivings are two different parts of our worship services, they celebrate the gift of life and the love of God; both occasions are significant and important:

Baptism is a moment when we give thanks for the generosity of God’s grace and commit ourselves (as a household) to being part of the life of a worshipping community (church). At an age of their own choosing the child may decide to confirm the commitments made by their parents through a process of Confirmation – contact us for more details.
The Thanksgiving celebration is for people who may struggle to authentically make commitments that include being part of a worshipping community. Thanksgivings can also be for those who would prefer to wait, leaving the step of baptism in the hands of the child when they are old enough to decide for themselves.

This page shows the wording of the promises shared by people/parents during a baptism or a thanksgiving celebration. Certificates are given at both occasions.

Are you considering Baptism for yourself? This is a wonder-filled moment, a moment of public commitment to following Christ.

We know that deciding to be baptised (a once-in-a-lifetime event) is very significant, and believe that such a decision should come from careful thought and reflection. For adults seeking baptism and/or confirmation we have a mentor process in place: a time to meet with someone else who can help you think about what this decision means and help guide you through the process.
